Corporate Lingo

Often we came across certain phrases used in corporate houses alone than in any other institutions / situaitons. Not that these words shall be used only at your place of work but it gain a special flavour at work place. Here goes a few…

Bleeding Edge Something relating to or describing systems, devices, or ideas that are so modern that they are still being developed. It is extreme version of cutting edge and is often associated with risks. The whole concept of internet was evolved as a bleeding edge technology.

Eg:The truth is iPhone Pro Max is not Apple’s bleeding edge phone

Low hanging fruit The most easily achieved of a set of tasks, measures, goals, etc. Similar meaning can be conveyed throught the term quick wins

Eg: Before aiming to achieve ambitious sales targets in niche market, why can’t you aim at quick wins? You already got some good referrals. Why not close these deals? Please start with these low hanging fruits

Move the needle To shift the situation in some area, activity, sphere etc. to a noticeable degree.

Eg: We need to move the needle on covid situation

Let’s run it up the flagpole and see if anyone salutes it To present an idea tentatively and see whether it receives a favorable reaction. In a lighter note, same message is being conveyed through to send up a trial balloon

Eg: Finally our teaser flyer is ready. Let’s run it up the flagpole and see if anyone salutes it

Zero sum game This is a situation described in game theory where in one person’s gain is equivalent to another’s loss, so the net change in wealth or benefit is zero. Hence, essentially it means, a situation in which one person or group can win something only by causing another person or group to lose it. Hence, it is opposite of win-win situation. There can be extended terms like zero sum mentality, zero sum mindset etc.

Eg:The end of we desgining a similar product like our competitior would be a price war and it is going to be zero sum game

Bunker Mentality A state of mind especially among members of a group that is characterized by chauvinistic defensiveness and self-righteous intolerance of criticism.

Eg: Faced with the threat of scandal, the company adopted a bunker mentality and refused to talk with reporters

Rabble Rousing Arousing to action or rebellion. A rabble-rouser is a clever speaker who can persuade a group of people to behave violently or aggressively, often for the speaker’s own political advantage.

Eg: While you were assigned to deliver a pep talk, make it sure that you shall not end up being a rabble rouser
